A Colourful Day in Wanaka

January 20

Sam:

We all said goodbye to our new friends and got on the road a bit later than we had wanted to and went to our first stop, Cromwell. We stopped in the historic precinct for a while. It had an old bakery, a few old shops, and lots of fairy doors hidden that you could find. We went into an art gallery that had some cool pictures and paintings. One of the shops had an old printing press and barber chair and tools. We stayed for awhile, but then we decided to keep going.

We then drove to Wanaka listening to the NFC championship football game between Green Bay and Dad’s favourite team, San Francisco 49ers, on the radio. Our first destination was just outside the town – a lavender farm.

There were lots of vineyards on the way.

Charlotte:

We got there and went into the farm. The lavender was so purple! There was a garden with lots of different flowers. The lavender was everywhere but mostly in big fields. Honeybees loved the lavender! In the garden, there was a big Connect 4 game and a big Tic Tac Toe game. Also, in the middle of one of the fields, there was a random purple door.

We saw lots of animals, like mini horses, pigs, alpacas, donkeys, Highland cows, and goats. My favourites were the goats and mini horses. The horses were named Toffee and Pepper, and I named one of the goats Joe.

It was really hot outside, so we went inside and tried lavender ice cream. It was delicious. I got chocolate lavender ice cream, Mom and Sam had berry lavender sherbet and Dad had honey lavender ice cream. While we were snacking, Dad met a Green Bay Packers fan. The game was almost over, and the 49ers were winning. They took a picture together because it was such a funny coincidence that they were both there.

After the lavender farm, we went into the town of Wanaka and went to a beach where we saw a cool tree growing in the middle of a lake. It was a rocky beach, and I had fun throwing rocks into the water for awhile. The water was pretty warm.

Then we went to a nice lake campsite at a place called “The Neck” and slept over there. We had to drive down a long gravel road and stopped for many cows to get there. The lake was called Lake Hawea.

Lucky girl!
