King’s Landing – Game of Thrones Dubrovnik

November 9 / 10

Charlotte:

Today we slept in because it was going to be a rainy day and it was a weekend. Sam and I played some games together while Mom and Dad napped.

When the rain stopped for a bit, Dad, Sam, and I went to a fortress called Fort Lovrijenac. It was kind of like a mini castle. It was still pretty big, and I like playing with Sam in it. We like pretending it was a magical school like Hogwart’s. Just after we left, we were watching some waves hit against it, but then we felt drops of rain and so we ran back to our house because we knew it was going to pour. We got wet but we made it before the thunderstorm started.

Brad:

It’s probably no surprise to anyone who knows me that one of my favourite TV shows is Game of Thrones. So when we discussed our plans to travel the world, one of the locations on my “must-visit” list was Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Dubrovnik is the crown jewel of the hit HBO TV show and many of the “Kings Landing” scenes were filmed here. The old city and surrounding area is a photographer’s dream as well. It is a truly incredible city to experience. I have never been to another place like this. Every stone street is walking only, with very steep stairs and matching red roofs and so much history to take in. We can and did wander around for hours wondering what shops, museums and scenery would be around the next corner. Sometimes, it really felt like we were in King’s Landing. Everywhere you turn is a new photo op.

Going in early November had its disadvantages in that it rained a fair bit when we were here, and the ocean was too cool to swim. However, accommodation rates were very reasonable, never had to wait for restaurants, the temperature was very comfortable (15C-20C), and it was so nice not to be surrounded by hordes of other tourists. I was able to take a lot of photos minimizing background distractions and got some pretty good shots.

West harbour – Scene where the gold cloaks murder Robert Baratheon’s illegitimate children
Steps outside the Dominican Monastery – locals giving a protest speech
Exit of Littlefinger’s brothel scene where he is talking to Varys
Scene where Sparrows arrest Loras Tyrell while training
Park where Purple Wedding was filmed
Minčenta tower – House of the undying

Later that day, Sam and I went to one of the gift shops that had an “Iron Throne” replica and costumes and I had some fun dressing up as Jon Snow. A couple of tourists that were visiting at the same time thought I looked like him so much that they asked if they could pose with me for some photos.

I recommend this excellent blog post to find a lot of the GoT filming locations in Dubrovnik.

Sam:

As we prepared to leave this wonderful place, Mom wanted to put her feet in the water and listen to the waves. Then we left for the port to catch our overnight ferry to Italy.

Not too cold!
The water temperature was about 70°C.

Good night!
