Into the Glacier

Charlotte:
Today at 10 in the morning we left to go to a glacier. It was a two hour drive to get to the first bus. We needed to take two buses to get up the mountain. The buses were bumpy!

I had to wear very warm clothes because it was very cold inside the Glacier. The leader (Maria) made me her little helper. I saw lots of cool things, like a church where there were actually 4 real weddings!

I was freezing! The ceiling kept dripping on us. It was a really nice tour, but after it was over we had to go all the way back home.

We had dinner at a yummy pizzeria called “Castello Pizzeria.”

Sam:

Into the Glacier was pretty fun. I liked it because we went into a glacier! 😜 (cue about 5 minutes of giggling and silliness between the kids in the backseat…)

Seriously, though, I learned that the temperature inside the Glacier is always 0°C, even in the winter. I also learned that there’s more than one type of ice and the glacier pushed down in itself, so the “old chapel” that we stood in will be gone in about 15 years.

Mom and Dad:

Today was a day we’ll remember for a long time! The “Into the Glacier” tour was truly a one of a kind experience.

The drive was filled with gorgeous scenery!

We drove north to a resort called Hotel Husafell where we got on a 4×4 shuttle bus. It took us about 30 minutes on a narrow gravel road up into the mountains to Klaki Base Camp. The scenery was filled with lava fields – it looked like we had landed in the moon!

We changed vehicles to a former NATO missile launcher to continue up onto the glacier (from 700m to 1260m).

When we finally arrived at the tunnel entrance to the glacier, we met our guide, Maria. She was very personable and knowledgeable and she was very sweet to our kids. Our group gathered in the first icy alcove to put on shoe snow chains to prevent slipping.

The tour lasted about an hour, and we learned so much about types of ice, how glaciers form and move, crevasses, melting, and more. It felt much colder than the 0°C it was, probably because we were soaked from all of the water dripping from the ceiling. ☺☔

On the way back, we stopped at a parking area that was quite crowded to see why so many people were there. Surprise! It was a stunning waterfall!
