Cliff Driving

November 16

Sam:

Today we took the bus to Amalfi, a town near Vietri that is really cool. We had the bus tickets from yesterday, so we checked the schedule to find the best time and hoped we’d have better luck today. The bus actually arrived almost on time!

The ride was about an hour long. We drove through several little towns along the coast. It was very scary because every time we turned the corner, the bus had to honk loudly so cars and cyclists would know that we were coming, as most of the turns were very tight and the bus took up both sides of the skinny road. There were a couple of times when crazy motorcycle drivers squeezed between us and oncoming cars at the very last second. Dad was so glad he hasn’t decided to rent a car so we could drive ourselves.

Also, the bus made an unscheduled stop in a town called Maiori where the driver told us to get out and wait for the next bus because he decided not to go the rest of the way. We waited for quite a while before the next bus showed up. We were getting a bit worried…

Even though the ride was nuts, the views were amazing.

While in Amalfi, we first spent a little while looking out at the sea.

Then, as we entered the town, we saw right away that there was a big church in the middle of the town square. As we walked up to the cathedral, we saw that there was a museum inside and even outside it was beautiful.

Most valuable mitre in Europe. There are over 1500 little pearls on it and lots of other gems.

We then went to get some gelato. We walked around for a while, and found a paper museum filled with tons of old but cool handmade paper.

Even so, we didn’t stay for that long because we had other things to do. Everywhere we went there were souvenir shops selling tons of stuff. Most of our walk was up a hill but it wasn’t that bad. It was pretty weird, though, that even on the really narrow shopping street, there were still cars and scooters going right by all of the people.

Interesting fountain…

There were two areas we found with really detailed fairy gardens. One was a fountain and the other was a fairy city someone had made.

After a few hours exploring Amalfi, we braved the bus back to Vietri-sul-Mare.

Sitting at the back of the bus wasn’t as scary as the front (where we sat on the way).
So many lemon groves
That water, though!

Sam:

There were thunderstorms all day and we’ve been very busy lately, so we chilled at home. It was a great day of movies and books.

  1. What an amazing day… crazy bus rides included! The breaches look wonderful… did anyone put their feet in? Gorgeous cathedral; I am amazed by the number of churches and cathedrals even in smaller cities and towns that you have visited. Missing you all so much, but continue to be so excited by your experiences! ❤️

  2. Your videos take me back, the lemon cello, the lemons, the beautiful stonework in cathedrals and public buildings, so old yet so usable today. The scenery, everything adding up to unforgettable experiences. Uncle Paul and Aunt Beth send their best wishes. I wish I could see it all again. Great grandma.
