Favourite Things, a Drop of Golden Sun, Living Hills, etc.

November 1

Sam:

Today is All Saints’ Day, a holiday here, so lots of places were closed, but we still found a really good café. To drink there was fresh OJ, hot chocolate, and my mom got a latte. We all got a few rolls with cheese, butter and jam, we also got a really good cheese pastry.

After, we pretty much walked across the street to the Mirabel gardens and in the garden, there was the biggest fountain I’d ever seen. There were a ton of statues that were kinda funny. We also went to the park that was inside the garden and it was pretty cool. This was one of the places used in filming The Sound of Music.

Charlotte:

We had tickets to go on The Sound of Music tour for the afternoon. It had a comfy bus and a nice tour guide named Peter.

The tour guide told us about the real Trapp family and some things that were different from the movie. One thing we learned is that Maria and Captain von Trapp were actually married for 11 years before the Nazis came and they had three more children together.

Peter also played some music on the bus and showed us the videos. Not all the songs had the full track, but they were still fun to watch.

We stopped at some places like the back gardens and lake.

We also saw the front of the house and the courtyard where Maria ran down when she first went to the Trapp house. We didn’t stop there we just drove the bus by.

Pretty castle we passed

We saw the hill lake district and the Nonnberg Abbey.

I was excited to see the gazebo because I was hoping we could go into it and dance like they did in the movie. We weren’t allowed in because a few years ago an old lady was dancing on the benches and fell through the glass. They fixed the glass and the lady was okay, but now people can’t go inside.

The palace where the gazebo is now. It was moved here to keep it safe.
This tribute was put up in honour of the actress who played Liesl.

While we were stopping at the church from the wedding scene, we had a little dessert. I had hot chocolate and a little piece of cake. Mom also had hot chocolate. Sam and Dad had water. Then we had to get back on the bus to return to Salzburg.

Silly faces – too many pictures! (Sam’s chocolate mousse cake was the favourite.)
Mom’s raspberry poppyseed cheesecake was delicious, too.
