Caen: An Unexpectedly Great City

October 23

Sam

We got to a place called Caen (Con) yesterday and our Airbnb was in the centre of the city. This morning, we wanted to check out the place we were staying, so we decided to walk around and look at the cool things nearby.

First we went to a bakery to get some breakfast. Most of the streets were pedestrian only and made out of cobblestones which made it easier to walk around.

Then we went to the Abbeye Des hommes, which is a giant church and it was special because the monseigneur which is kind of like the priest of the church. In world war 2, he hid the citizens of Caen inside of the Abbeye while bombs were dropping.

The stained glass windows were so beautiful

Inside of the building next to the Abbeye was an art gallery, which we really enjoyed. We weren’t allowed to take pictures of the art, but it was really great and we talked about the texture the artists created in their work.

While we were walking, we saw a huge castle with a lot of people around it, so we decided to check it out. We stopped for a snack of macarons on the way. We tried lemon, raspberry, salted caramel, and mango. Raspberry was the best.

Charlotte:

We walked in the castle and then we saw there was a horse festival, and Mum heard that this was the only day that they were going to come here. The whole family was shocked, and I was so excited. It was awesome!

Mom told me that horseback riding trainers were going to do a show. So we watched it. None of us really got what was going on; we thought it was kind of weird. There was one lady throwing paint at a black screen, one girl dancing around and rubbing the horse, a lady who ride a second horse and seemed to be trying to train the first horse and girl, and then a fourth woman came out and was doing some opera singing while more dancing and horse rubbing happened.

After that we wanted to walk around the castle walls. It wasn’t that big. I had lots of fun walking up it. I loved running across them finding new places to explore in it. It was great!!!

After that we looked around at some ancient buildings that were cool because they weren’t destroyed by bombs in the war.

We enjoyed dinner and went to bed. Sleeping with of us in one room is kind of challenging.

  1. You saw a lot more of Caen than we did but I loved the city. I loved France and it is so nice to see it again through your wonderful pictures. Thank you and God bless. Love from Great grandma.

  2. Caen sounds fantastic. Sam’s information regarding the church and its use during the war is reflective. Charlotte’s story of the horse show is so funny! Wish I was there. The macarons look delicious. Enjoy Croatia!

  3. I had to google where Caen is because I had no clue and now I know it’s in France. I really loved the looks of Abbeye Des hommes, although I’m not religious, I love visiting cathedrals and churches because of impressive architecture, thanks for sharing and safe travels. Aiva
