Soaking in Sligo

Sam:
Mostly we relaxed for the morning at our house. We went to the local park for about an hour and then we went into Sligo town and walked around. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant. I had noodles and garlic bread. For dessert I had mint and chocolate ice cream. Then we came home and watched a movie called Molly Moon. It was pretty good.

Charlotte:

I woke up and read a book, wrote a letter, and played for the morning. In the afternoon, we went to the park. It was raining. Mom, Dad, and Sam went to sit in the car, but I started and played more.

Then we went to a castle church. It was pretty. It was breaking and had no roof. There were lots of gravestones inside it. The carved altar was my favourite part because it was very detailed and even though it’s really old it’s still very, very neat.

At night, we watched an amazing movie called Molly Moon. She learned how to hypnotize people and could get whatever she wanted. She became a family singer even though she was pretty bad at it. She learned that her friends were the most important.
Mom and Dad:
Relaxation after a very busy few days was the order of the day for us today. The heat wave Ireland has been experiencing for awhile has finally broken and the rain has begun. We had no plans and were glad of that.
By afternoon, the kids were starting to get under one another’s skin and so we decided to go to the local park for a bit. We were all fine with braving the mist and drizzle, but only Charlotte was willing to keep playing even when a downpour began.

Once she was satisfied, we decided to go into Sligo town to wander around and have dinner.

We parked near the Sligo Abbey and decided to have a look around. It was absolutely fascinating! Many parts of the ruinous building date back to the 13th century and most others to the 15th and 16th centuries. I can’t explain how it makes me feel to stand in a place with that much history and imagine the people who lived and the events that happened so long ago. Charlotte was rushing ahead and pulling at my hand to try to get me to “come see this,” but I just feel the need to be still and quiet, listening for voices from the past and taking it all in. This is one of the best parts of exploring Europe… Who knew I would grow to become such a history nerd?

Besides

spending a couple of hours outside on a true Irish afternoon (very rainy), it was an unexpectedly good day!
